Road Transport and Road Traffic Accident Statistics (Island of Mauritius) January – June 2019 1. Vehicles registered as at June 2019 At the end of June 2019, there were 568,879 vehicles registered at the National Transport Authority (NTA). This represents a net increase of 12,878 vehicles (2.3%) as compared to end of year 2018 when the number of registered vehicles was 556,001 (Table 1.1). During the first semester of 2019, the fleet was strengthened with the registration of 15,713 vehicles, of which 10,094 (64.2%) were new, 4,980 (31.7%) were imported second- hand and 639 (4.1%) were re-registered vehicles; i.e., those which had been previously put off the road. During the same period 2,835 vehicles were put off the road. The net addition to the existing fleet worked out to 12,878 vehicles (Table 1.1). 2. Composition of fleet A breakdown of the fleet by type of vehicle is given in Table 1.2. At the end of June 2019, the fleet consisted of 52.5% (298,543) cars, double cab pickups and dual purpose vehicles and 37.7% (214,482) auto/motor cycles. The remaining 9.8% comprised vans (28,730), lorries and trucks (15,801), buses (3,091) and other vehicles (8,232). 3. Vehicles used for transport of passengers 3.1 Cars, double cab pickups and dual purpose vehicles At the end of June 2019, the number of cars, double cab pickups and dual purpose vehicles was 298,543, a rise of 3.1% over the figure of 289,676 as at end of December 2018. This increase resulted from the registration of 9,921 such vehicles (5,049 new, 4,604 imported second-hand and 268 re-registered), partly offset by 1,054 vehicles that were put off the road. 3.2 Buses At the end of June 2019, there were 3,091 registered buses, out of which 2,029 or 65.6% were 'public' buses operating with a road service licence. During the first semester of 2019, some 33 new buses were registered, while 28 buses were put off the road, resulting in an increase of 5 buses. 2 4. Motor cycles and auto cycles At the end of June 2019, there were 214,482 motor cycles and auto cycles. This represents a net increase of 3,357 (+1.6%) against 211,125 at the end of December 2018. 5. Road traffic accidents The number of road accidents registered during the first semester of 2019 went up by 16.2% to reach 17,001 as compared to 14,634 recorded during the corresponding period of 2018. Among these accidents, the majority, 15,606 (91.8%) were non-injury, 64 fatal, 269 caused serious injuries and 1,062 slight injuries. Compared to the same period of 2018, casualty and non-injury accidents went up by 11.3% and 16.6% respectively. The number of fatal accidents decreased by 19.0%, whereas serious and slight injury accidents increased by 11.2% and 13.9% respectively (Table 2.1). 6. Vehicles involved in road accidents During the first semester of 2019, the total number of vehicles (both motor and non- motor) involved in road accidents was 30,561 (+6.5%) against 28,709 in the corresponding period of the preceding year. The number of motor vehicles involved in accidents resulting in casualties was 2,055 during the first semester of 2019 against 1,938 for the same period of 2018. Table 2.3 shows that 38.8% of these vehicles were motor/auto cycles, another 35.0% were cars, 7.5 % were vans, and 6.8% were buses. 7. Casualties The number of casualties (fatalities and persons injured as a result of road accidents) increased by 4.0% from 1,763 during the first semester of 2018 to 1,834 during the corresponding period of 2019. Among the casualties during the period January to June 2019, 69 were fatal, 304 were seriously injured and the remaining 1,461 were slightly injured. Compared to the corresponding period of 2018, the number of persons who died as a result of road accidents went down by 21.6% from 88 to 69, while those seriously injured increased by 10.9% from 274 to 304 and slightly injured by 4.3%, from 1,401 to 1,461 (Table 2.1). Table 2.4 shows that, among the casualties during the first semester of 2019, some 40.3% were riders of auto/motor cycles, 24.6% passengers, 17.0% pedestrians, 13.5% drivers and 4.6% pedal cyclists. Out of the 69 persons who died in road accidents during the first semester of 2019, the most vulnerable ones were riders/pillion riders of motorised two wheelers (24) and pedestrians (21) (Table 2.6). 3 8. Hit and run cases of accidents causing casualties During the first six months of 2019, some 42 'hit and run' cases causing casualties were reported as compared to 97 during the same period of 2018. Out of these 42 cases, 64.3% (27) involved both vehicles and pedestrians, while the other 35.7% (15) involved vehicles only (Table 2.5).
