THE MAURITIUS CITIZENSHIP REGULATIONS, 1968 Application for Registration as a Citizen of Mauritius of a person under section 6 of the Mauritius Citizenship Act, 1968 The instructions for completing this form should be read carefully before the form is filled up. Portions of the form which are not applicable must be struck out and initialed in every case. Caution: - Section 20(1) of the Mauritius Citizenship Act, 1968 provides that: - "Any person who for the purpose of procuring anything to be done or not to be done under this Act or under Regulation made under this Act makes any statement which he knows to be false in a material particular, or recklessly makes any statement which is false in a material particular, shall be liable on conviction to imprisonment for a term not exceeding one year or to a fine not exceeding one thousand rupees." Section 195 of the Courts Ordinance provides that: - "Any person swearing a false affidavit whenever an affidavit is required or may be used, shall be liable to penal servitude not exceeding three years and to a fine not exceeding one thousand rupees." 1. A minor child of a citizen of Mauritius may be registered as a citizen under this section by the parent or the guardian of the child. HOW TO APPLY 2. Application Forms are available at the Citizenship Section of the Prime Minister's Office, Level 4, Government Centre, Port Louis, Tel Nos 201-1495; 201-3362; 201-2208 or on the following website: pmo.govmu.org. APPLICATION PROCEDURES 3. A declaration in the form set out in the application form has to be subscribed in Mauritius in the presence of a Judge or the Master & Registrar of the Supreme Court or a District Magistrate, prior to submission. 4. The following supporting documents in original and two photocopies should accompany the application (clean and legible copies on A4 format):- (a) birth certificate of minor child; (b) birth certificates of parents or guardian; recent copies thereof (c) marriage certificate of parents; (d) first five pages of minor's passport; (e) the certificate of registration or naturalization of the child's parent, if the latter is a Mauritian citizen by registration or naturalization; and (f) the certificate of foreign nationality of the child's parent (if applicable). NOTE: Any change of name should be made executory in Mauritius. 5. A non-refundable application fee of Rs 2,000 should be paid upon submission of the application. 6. Upon approval, a prescribed fee of Rs 20,000 is payable at the Cash Office of the Prime Minister's Office, Level 2, Government Centre, Port Louis and thereafter the Certificate of Registration is issued within one week. 7. If the application is not approved, the applicant is notified accordingly by way of a letter within a week. VALIDITY OF A CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRATION 8. A Certificate of Registration issued under the Mauritius Citizenship Act is valid for an indefinite period but it should be kept safely as no duplicate is issued in case of loss. DEPRIVATION OF CITIZENSHIP 9. Any person who has acquired citizenship by registration may be deprived of that citizenship if the registration has been obtained by means of fraud, false representation or the concealment of any material fact. NOTE Only a complete dossier with all relevant documents will be accepted. Processing of applications generally requires 12 months.
